Our Teaching Philosophy

All children can learn. However, when it comes to grasping various math concepts, it's imperative that students have an understanding of numbers and how they work.

Numbers are a complex and multifaceted concept. Number sense, which is a relational understanding of numbers, involves many different ideas, relationships, and skills. We think of number sense as a "good intuition about numbers and their relationships...[that] develops gradually as a result of exploring numbers, visualizing them in a variety of contexts, and relating them in ways that are not limited by traditional algorithms" (Howden, 1989, p.11). 

In kindergarten through 2nd grade, children should develop "good intuition" about numbers up to 20. Number sense should continue developing throughout the school years as other types of numbers, such as fractions, decimals, percentages, and integers, add to the students' repertoire of number ideas.
